Contains chapters from notebooks by Thomas and Joshua Gilpin, papermakers on the Brandywine in Delaware who also operated a woolen carding and spinning mill at their paper mill from 1812-1814. Notes cover sheep and wool in England, wool manufacture and dyeing at Leeds, indigo grinding, shearing, merino wool, flannel and baize manufacture, worsted spinning, bleaching, printing and finishing, etc. Also includes sketches of machinery and layouts of mills, only one of which (Marshall's Mills at Leeds) is mentioned by name. Also contains notes by Thomas Gilpin headed: Papers on the Wool and Cotton Manufactures. Sheep and Other Subjects Included with Them. 1815.

John Pemberton of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a member of the Society of Friends, was imprisoned with 19 other men in Winchester, Virginia, between 1777 and 1778, after refusing to swear allegiance to the United States. Fearing collusion with invading British forces, the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania arrested 17 Quakers and three additional men in September 1777, and transferred the prisoners to Winchester, Virginia, later that month.
